My photo
Grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints and Roman Catholic traditions, including a stint at a Catholic school; somewhat sadly, before the point at which young women (people - not the misogynist Mormon class) wore kilts. Attended church until a teen, but held atheist sentiments from a young age, despite being in a family full of believers. This is a place for my thoughts regarding religion on both a personal level and relating to the world, of which I am a member... And Mormons say journals are a good thing :)

Flying from the Fear

One part (2:27) really stood out to me, since I had a similar experience.
"You go to church and they're all like 'Do you accept God?' 'Do you believe God is in your heart?' and if you say 'no' ...Am I supposed to hear a little man inside my head? A voice telling me he loves me? ...Well, no; I didn't feel that... I don't feel anything when I go to church. That automatically made me think I was going to hell cause I didn't hear this little man in my head telling me stuff"

It's Hammer Time

People are instructed to stop and listen for the "still small voice" that will guide them. I sometimes sense something telling me what to do, and often if I follow it I am better off for having done so.

I chalk it up to common sense, however.

Golly, what's this Holy Ghost?

According to this unbiased informational site, the Holy Ghost acts as a witness of heavenly beings through the revelation of the truth. Apparently it can be felt by anyone however it "does not linger with a person unless they've received" it, wich is done when one is baptised. This presents some issues:

  • How can one 'feel' the spirit when being converted by missionaries or reading the Book of Mormon, to a convincing degree?
  • If someone raised in a Mormon family doesn't reach the age of accountability and ability to be baptised until they are 8, why should they be expected to have testimonies and act accordingly before that?
  • If, after being baptised, one doesn't feel the spirit, is it due to some personal deficit? If so, why would a heavely creator allow this to occur and does this mean they are inperfect?

I can't answer the first one since my lineage includes Mormons way back when. I found the last two to be problematic growing up, and the only answer I can come up with is that there is none.
