My photo
Grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints and Roman Catholic traditions, including a stint at a Catholic school; somewhat sadly, before the point at which young women (people - not the misogynist Mormon class) wore kilts. Attended church until a teen, but held atheist sentiments from a young age, despite being in a family full of believers. This is a place for my thoughts regarding religion on both a personal level and relating to the world, of which I am a member... And Mormons say journals are a good thing :)

Titleless Thoughts

This Mormon Curtian article questions whether certian people would be better off without Mormonism.

I'm better without it, without a doubt, but for those who have their entire identity entwined with The Church it may be different. I feel this way in regards to most of my relatives, especially as I've gotten older.

When I was a young child my inner voice said "this is bogus" whenever they'd pray, or tell me stories of how some great thing had happened in response to their prayers. When I was a bit older I'd question them, asking "Are you sure it was because of the prayer? Maybe it was just a coincidence?" they'd deny it (since god is everywhere, or something like that) Even the out-there stories about the garments. They weren't urban myths or something with another explination, such as the fire not having enough time to burn through their clothing; No, they were True and Real Facts.

Snopes only gave one hit about LDS legends. They don't say either way, alluding to people's personal truths.

Despite what I'd label as a false consciousness, my relatives (at least some of them) are (sometimes) happy. It may be my responsibility to tell them, both Mormon and Catholic, what I see as the truth (as much as something subjective like my version of reality can be) but it is also their right to live their life as they see fit. Since I'd want them to 'let it live' towards me, I should do the same.

As I was typing this, I was listening to Combichrist's "Enjoy The Abuse", Apoptygma Berzerk's "You Keep Me From Breaking Apart" and Assemblage 23's "Sorry". Pretty fitting for this entry (The first two remind me of some of my relatives relationships with others and their religion, and the last describes mine)
